AI Alt Text
Privacy policy
Effective September 26, 2026
This policy describes how the AI Alt Text Shopify app handles information when a merchant installs it. The app generates alt text for images in a Shopify store and can write that text back to Shopify.
Information from Shopify
When a merchant installs the app, Shopify provides an access token for that shop and the granted permissions, which are read_files and write_files. A session may also include the signed-in staff member’s name, email address, user id, locale, and whether they are the account owner. The app uses this only to stay connected to the shop and to read or update image files.
The app does not request customer or order permissions. It does not keep a copy of customer profiles or orders.
Information the app stores
For each installed shop, the app stores:
- The shop domain and Shopify session, including the access token.
- Settings the merchant chooses, such as automatic saving, the 15-minute missing-alt check, and whether scheduled runs are limited to product images.
- A short history of scheduled runs: when a run happened, how many alt texts were saved, and a one-line result. The generated alt text itself is written to Shopify, not kept in this history.
Image files are downloaded only long enough to create alt text. The app does not keep the image bytes after that request finishes.
Google Gemini
To write alt text, the app sends the image, its file name, and a short instruction to Google’s Gemini API. The request is made with storage of that interaction turned off. Google processes the content under its own API terms. The app then shows the result to the merchant and, if they save it or a schedule is set to save, writes it to the image in Shopify.
Where data is hosted
The app runs on Vercel. Shop sessions, settings, and schedule history are stored in a PostgreSQL database provided through Prisma. Shopify hosts the store’s images and the saved alt text.
How long data is kept
Shop data is deleted when the merchant uninstalls the app. Shopify also sends a shop redaction request after uninstall, and the app deletes any remaining sessions, settings, and schedule history for that shop. Because the app does not store customer records, a customer data request or customer redaction has no customer profile to export or delete.
What the app does not do
The app does not sell personal information, does not use it for advertising, and does not share it with anyone other than Shopify, as the store platform, and Google, to generate alt text.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date at the top of this page will change with it.
